South African Emporium As a true Durbanite at heart, I moved to the United States in 2003 to be with my wife and to start a new future. After arriving, amongst other challenges, it was difficult for me to adjust to the flavours of food, and food in general. Even though I appreciated the variety of foods in America, I would miss my mother’s home-cooked meals and my neighbour’s and friend’s home-cooked meals. I can remember running across the road when my mum made vegetables to eat a lovely mutton curry next door.
